Identify a dataset to work with

  • You must have one constant, such a set of countries
  • Compare that constant against two other variables, for example literacy and unemployment
  • You may add other variables, such as years or ranges of years, or regions, GDP, etc
  • You must be able to download and manipulate the data you collect

Define your topic based on the site you prefer and identify the data points you will use

Read background information on these sites and others to provide context and depth to your analysis

Statista offers loads of data on various wide-ranging topics. Some of their data is free, but topics with a green mark are only Premium access. Explore topics by interest and be sure you can access the excel version.

The Infographics section is interesting to explore and can give ideas for topics.

CIA World Factbook gathers statistics about all of the countries of the world and organizes them to present a data-driven picture of the status of issues in those countries. CIA stands for "Central Intelligence Agency" and is an organization in the US Government.

  • See Countries to examine issues in one particular country in detail
  • See Country Summaries to see a one-page snapshot about a particular country (recommended for background information!)

The World Bank is not actually a bank - it's an organization that funds special projects around the world to address inequality of all types. It's like the "bank" for the world.

  • Development Topics: Choose a topic and read an overview of the issues. Then dig into the data that informs the latest research
  • Open Data: See data on various topics
    • Browse by country or indicator (line, bar, map options)
  • Data by Indicator, see topics and sub-topics
  • Databank lists other databases (massive) but not all are public access

World Health Organization (WHO) is a branch of the United Nations (UN) that compiles data from the countries of the world related to health and safety.

The OECD (Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development) 

"Better policies for better lives." The OECD is an international organization that works with governments, policy makers, and citizens to create policies that will lead to a better world.
